Create an Essay Question in Test
TestTrick allows you to add Essay Questions to your tests. Essay questions are ideal for evaluating writing skills, reasoning, problem-solving, and role-specific knowledge. Candidates provide their answers in a text format.

Step 1: Open Essay Question Editor
- Log in to TestTrick and go to Step 2 (Add Questions) of test creation.
- Click on the Essay Question card to open the editor.

Step 2: Add Question Description
- Enter the question text in the description field.
- Clearly describe the task or scenario the candidate needs to respond to.
Example: "Describe a situation where you solved a complex problem in your previous role."

Step 3: Set Time for the Question
- If your test uses question-wise timing, set the time limit for this essay question.
- Candidates will have this much time to write their answer.
Step 4: Add Skills (Optional)
- Tag skills the question is assessing.
- Skills tagging is for internal reference only and does not affect the candidate’s experience.
Example: Communication, Analytical Thinking, Problem Solving
Step 5: AI-Based Scoring (Optional)
Enable AI Scoring
- After entering the question description, click Generate Criteria to enable AI evaluation.

- AI automatically generates scoring criteria based on the question content. You can review and edit these criteria if needed before using the question in a test.
- Once enabled, AI evaluates candidate responses automatically based on the defined criteria.
Step 6: Set Score

By default, each essay question has a score of 1.
Click Show Options to:

- Make this question unscorable (manual evaluation required)
- Change the weightage to increase its contribution to the total score. AI scores the response based on the weightage assigned to the question.
⚠️ Unscorable questions do not contribute to the candidate’s total or average score also if ai scoring will disable immediately.
Step 7: Save the Essay Question
- After adding the description, time, optional skills, and score settings, click Save.
- The essay question is added to the test list and can be reviewed, edited, reordered, or deleted as needed.
Candidate Experience
- Candidates see the essay question description.
- They provide their answer in a text input box within the allocated time.
